image of toy choo-choo trains

Today is Play With Your Toy Trains Day all across this great nation of ours. I hope you were sprawled across the living room floor piecing together track and crashing choo-choos into one another a la Gomez Addams, or in your attic adding another building to the sprawling iron road empire you’ve been steadily assembling up there, or babysitting for your best friend because he bought his kids the most awesome Brio train set anywhere in the three-state area where you live.

If you don’t have a toy train set, I can only believe you’ve denied yourself one all these years for the sole purpose of fishing for sympathy from the rest of us, and I won’t stand for that kind of emotional blackmail. Go get yourself one the very next chance you get. There are so many to choose from, it’s not hard to find the one that’s right for you. If you like gadgetry, there are electric train sets galore. If you like simplicity, those nifty wooden train sets are easy to set up and put away. If you like toys that can multitask, Lego makes one terrific toy train set. There’s no excuse for you not to have a toy train.

I made that up about today being toy train day. I only said that because I spent almost the whole day in the basement of Our Humble O’Bode playing with my own train set. For me it was Play With Your Toy Trains Day. For you, it could have been, if you had a toy train, you trainless sad sack.

But I’m entirely sincere when I say that everyone should have a toy train. Why everyone thinks that grown-ups shouldn’t play with toys is beyond me. Deep in my heart I’m sure the world would be a better place if everyone had a toy train set they played with every once in a while.
