My Darling B has a notebook computer that doesn’t work very well. It used to, back in the first few months after she bought it, but then it slowed down, slower and slower until she updated the operating system from Vista to Windows 7. By then it was running so slowly that took the better part of an eon to do the update, but it ran a lot better after that … for a month or so. “I don’t even care anymore,” she told me this morning. “Some days it’s gonna run fine, some days it’s not. That’s just the way it is.” Zen and the art of living with a notebook computer.

This morning, she was trying to figure out why she couldn’t get to her calendar. Every time she tried to get there, it redirected her to something else, so she Googled “Why can’t I get to my calendar?” The results page was a long list of helpful-looking articles, starting with the first one, which was titled something like “how to get to your calendar,” but when she clicked on it, she ended up at a video of Emma Watson naked on the toilet. “Why would anyone even want that?” she asked rhetorically.

“You know what’s happening, don’t you?” I answered. “There’s an army of frustrated Emma Watson fanboys out there Googling ‘Emma Watson Naked’ and ending up at your calendar.”
