I just found the most amazing time-sucking web site on the internet called “If We Don’t, Remember Me,” a collection of animated scenes from classic movies. (The title of the web site is apparently a quote from a movie I’m not familiar with but will almost certainly have to find and watch now.) I linked to it from an article in the Los Angeles Times, intending only to have a quick look, maybe bookmark it and come back later if it turned out to be interesting. It did. I passed the better part of an hour scrolling past scene after scene of some of the most smartly-done animations on the net. And they are truly compelling. Each snapshot is an instantly recognizable scene, assuming you’ve seen the movie, of course, and the animation is usually very subtly done, usually no more than the turning of a head, the raising of an eyelid, or the slight movement of breathing, to make the scene come alive. Far and away the most amusing ones were any of the scenes from The Shining, nearly all featuring Jack Nicholson making a very Nicholsonesque face: tapping on the bathroom door just before he starts to tease Wendy with “little pig, little pig, let me come in!” Or, braying laughter at Lloyd the bartender. But the animations from Young Frankenstein were just as much fun. You can’t go wrong with any scene that features the popeyes of Marty Feldman.
