Your mondegreen for today was going to be the last line of the chorus to “Ventura Highway” by America:
Cause the free wind is blowin’ through your hair
And the day surrounds your daylight there
Seasons cryin’ no despair
Alligator lizards in the air
For years I’ve thought either I had to be hearing that wrong or they were out of their minds on acid when they wrote that song. Turns out I was probably wrong on both counts: It isn’t a mondegreen at all; they really are saying “alligator lizards in the air.” Dewey Bunnell, the guy who wrote the song, explained in a 2006 interview with the Los Angeles Times it’s a reference to looking at cloud formations. Well, you don’t necessarily need to be tripping on acid to see alligators in the clouds, so I could be wrong about that, too. And now I can sing all four lines of the chorus as I heard them without feeling self-conscious about it.
