The Pipe is a David and Goliath documentary in which the people of a small Irish fishing village fought the Shell Oil Company to a standstill as the corporation tried its damndest to build a pipeline through the middle of the village.
It was that part about “through the middle of the village” that really stunned me. Shell drilled a well out in the North Atlantic Ocean to bring natural gas up from the bottom. To get it to a refinery they ran an underwater pipe to the west coast of Ireland where some genius decided it would be easiest and cheapest to run it right through the middle of the fishing village of Rossport. Did no one at that exploratory meeting raise their hand and suggest that this might piss off the people who live in the village quite a lot?
Even though the battle was not won by the end of this movie, it still made me want to stand on my chair and root for the villagers. Five out of Five.
