One more goofy old-time photo, and then I’ll let it go for a while. I have no idea who these guys are, they could be Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for all I know. Now that I’ve said that, I kind of hope they are. I’m pretty sure they’re not, though. They’re just two guys in my family’s past named Hans and Carl or Fritz and John. That side of the family is littered with Carls and Johns and Fritzes.

I was up late last night – past ten o’clock! – scanning pages out of the Great Big Photo Album of People Who Are Related to Me But I Don’t Know Who They Are. I scan the whole page so the photos are preserved in their original context, then make a copy of each individual photo so I can add my own wandering thoughts, conjectures and pithy comments to them. Then I uploaded the individual photos to a flickr account I started toying with many moons ago. I was going to upload every single one of them until last night, when I was informed that I was approaching the free-account limit of ninety photos and would have to pay twenty-four ninety-five a year if I wanted to save more than ninety. I’ve got a lot of photos in a lot of albums and I’m wondering what the limit is on the upgraded account, and how much I’ll have to pay to upload them all. So now I’m looking for another way to post all these photos. I’m such a cheap bastard.

Like the rest of the photos in the Great Big Photo Album of People Who Might Be Related To Me But I Don’t Know How, this one isn’t dated and there are no names or notes scribbled on the back. Still, I might actually know what’s going on here.

My mother had an aunt everybody called Lulu. She was married to the coal king of Green Bay, Frank Hurlbut. Several of the photos in the album are scenes from the coal docks in Green Bay. The guys in this picture are going into a coal mine. So, I have the sneaking suspicion that at least some of these guys could be employees of the Hurlbut coal company. One of the men in those coal cars might even be Frank Hurlbut. But that’s just an idea.

From the Great Big Photograph Album of People Distantly Related to Me but I Don’t Know Who: I think they’re play-acting. There’s a lot of photos of people play-acting in the Great Big Photo Album Etc. Sometimes they’re obviously play-acting on a stage, but sometimes they’re standing around in a house, or on a back lawn. I get the impression that when people got in front of a camera back then, they felt they should be in tableau, and tried their darndest to improvise a scene. At least that’s what The People Distantly Related to Me Etc. seemed to be doing.

And, as before, I haven’t the slightest idea which of the people in this photo might be related to me. Maybe all of them. Maybe just one. I think it’s probably the nerd in the suit proposing something to the shocked-looking woman.
